The group is led by Prof. Ikeda with cooperation of Dr. Phuangsuwan. The laboratory is currently investigating the mechanism of the simultaneous color contrast phenomenon. The basic idea for the phenomenon is  the chromatic adaptation to the surrounding color. The phenomenon becomes stronger if the observer feels more illumination from the surrounding. Techniques to strengthen the feeling are to use afterimage, and to see the stimulus through a tissue or silk.  Observers can see vivid color for the central gray patch even with stimulus made by a paper, which normally does not give vivid color.
